Lochgelly Charrette inspires local school children
PUPILS from all five local schools in Lochgelly took part in a two day sustainability workshop in the lead up to the Charrette. The Scottish Government made available resources from SUST to raise awareness and encourage engagement with the younger audience.
The SUST Initiative was developed in order to increase public perception of sustainable design and the contribution it can make in delivering a future that maintains an ecological balance.
The school workshop involved mind mapping a sustainable town and designing models representing different Eco friendly buildings and facilities. The project allowed pupils to choose between different design elements that will be ecologically sound, healthy and which suits their needs.
An enormous amount of thought and creativity went into the designs and this was evident from the variety on display. Using the children’s ideas, Lochgelly will look forward to an Eco friendly arcade, a new town centre complete with large swimming pool, solar powered dustbins, an Eco farm and the Paddle 6000; a leisure cruiser which uses the energy expended by its customers.
The workshops took place on Thursday, 4 and Friday, 5 March. Almost 30 pupils from all five local schools took part. Their results were displayed in a presentation on Friday at Lochgelly West Primary School, and were then exhibited at the Opening Presentation of the Charrette on Monday, 8 March in the Town Hall.
Bailey Mclelland, a pupil at Lochgelly West Primary School, said: “I thought it was a fun experience. Our group worked well together and we tried to make a house as Eco friendly as it could be. All the other schools and groups had really clever ideas as well. It was a lot of fun.
Kate Hendry for Sust. said: “Through the SSCI the people of Lochgelly have a huge opportunity to influence the future development of their town. The schools workshop has produced a number of inspiring ideas from the town’s young people. Hopefully this will encourage as many people as possible to get involved in the Lochgelly Charrette”.
Lynn Leitch, Locality Manager for Lochgelly and Cardenden said: “The enthusiasm and passion of the children involved in the workshops is overwhelming. It is reassuring to think the future of Lochgelly, and wider, is in the hands of such inventive and caring young people”.
