Archived news: published on Monday 08 Feb 2010 by Fife Council

Following a recent inspection report of Lochgelly West Primary School and Nursery Class Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Schools identified, courteous, respectful children who were keen to learn as a strength of the school.

The report highlighted a number of particular strengths including:

  • a caring nurturing learning environment which supports children well,
  • staff teamwork,
  • support for parents in engaging them in children’s learning
  • the leadership of the headteacher and her commitment to school improvement.

Cllr. Douglas Chapman, Chair of the Education and Children’s Services Committee, said: “Lochgelly West primary school is a good example of a school working well in partnership with parents and the local community and extending the links to help children get the most from the curriculum.

“The staff and children are all involved in the learning process and there is obviously a really positive atmosphere of help, support and sharing amongst the pupils, staff and parents to ensure the best results for all.”

Across the school and nursery children were actively involved in all aspects of their learning. Children were achieving success both within and beyond the classroom. Very clear target setting helped children to know how to make better progress in their learning with staff being very proactive in providing support to children and families. Children with additional needs were supported very effectively with clear and detailed support plans in place. The pastoral care of children was deemed to be of a very high quality.

It was found that children felt that their opinions were valued and were confident about raising any concerns with staff. Parents felt very welcomed in the nursery and school with a significant number of parents attending Family Time to share learning activities with their children. The Parent Council was noted in being very supportive of the school and all school events were well attended by parents.

Pupils were encouraged to lead developments, for example campaigning successfully for safer access to school grounds and facilities.

Inspectors noted staff worked well together, all being involved in taking forward school improvements. The nursery staff were also committed to ongoing improvement. The headteacher had a number of approaches in place to monitor the work of the school. Expectations were high for all children across the school and Nursery and children were treated with respect in a warm and welcoming environment.

The headteacher was praised for her clear sense of direction for the school and the inspectorate is confident that improvements in light of the inspection findings will be addressed.

Inspectors identified three areas for improvement , the nursery requires to increase opportunities for children to access quality outdoor learning experiences, the school needs to improve attainment in writing and staff need to become more involved in the impact of improvement priorities.

Headteacher Carol Pryde, said: “HMIe identified three points for action which we had already identified as developments in the current School Improvement plan. “I’m very pleased with the outcome of the report, particularly, that meeting learners’ needs was thought to be very good and all other aspects deemed to be good. As a school we receive tremendous support from parents and the local community, which is invaluable in supporting the very positive ethos and learning environment within school.

“I’m particularly happy that HMI have identified the enterprising engagement with local business Davis Sands as an example of good practice.
